The American Mathematics Competitions give curious students a different kind of mathematical challenge: unfamiliar problems that reward insight, persistence, and clear reasoning. We help students learn how to begin, adapt, and explain their thinking.

The MAA’s American Mathematics Competitions invite students to solve problems whose methods are not announced in advance. The AMC 8, 10, and 12 increase in mathematical scope, but all ask students to draw on what they know and decide how to use it.
Preparation can be valuable well beyond one score. Students practice trying an idea, noticing when it is not working, and finding a clearer route.

Grade 8 and below

Middle-school mathematics, from counting and proportional reasoning to geometry and patterns.
For younger students who enjoy puzzles and are ready to investigate a question before being shown a method.

Algebra, geometry, counting, probability, and number theory, often combined in unfamiliar ways.
For students ready to choose and connect ideas independently. Trigonometry is not part of the official AMC 10.

A broad high-school mathematics toolkit, including advanced algebra and trigonometry but not calculus.
For students prepared to sustain longer chains of reasoning and seek the structure beneath a difficult problem.
Explore AMC 12 preparationThe MAA also sets age limits. Confirm full competition eligibility in the official rules. Course placement is reviewed individually; students do not have to take the three preparation courses in sequence.
Guidance for mathematical potential
Some students move quickly through familiar school exercises but have had little opportunity to wrestle with unfamiliar mathematics. A thoughtful challenge, patient guidance, and conversation about competing approaches can help them develop that potential.
Our small-group workshops make room for independent attempts, useful wrong turns, and clear explanations. No “gifted” label or prior contest record is needed to ask about a course.
Translate the question, test a case, and decide what is known.
Try a representation, look for structure, and adjust when it stops helping.
Compare solutions and explain why one path is clearer or more efficient.
Taking the official AMC
Enrolling in a Provident Scholars course does not enter a student in an official MAA competition.
Provident Scholars does not currently administer the official AMC or accept competition registrations. We hope to arrange an eligible local site or partner in the future. When a hosting arrangement is confirmed, we will publish the location, dates, and registration instructions here.

If your school does not host, the MAA suggests local colleges, universities, math circles, and learning centers. Families do not register directly with the MAA.
Competition dates and registration rules are set by the MAA each season.

We can discuss course fit and scheduling even if your family is just beginning to explore competition mathematics.
No. Preparation and official competition participation are separate. Provident Scholars is not currently accepting competition registrations. Students take the official AMC through an eligible registered host.
No. Curiosity, an appropriate mathematical starting point, and willingness to work through unfamiliar problems matter more. We review course readiness with each family.
The MAA sets grade and age eligibility rules for each competition. Within those rules, we consider the student’s mathematical background and readiness rather than placing solely by grade. A prior AMC course is not an absolute prerequisite for the next one.
Ask about another time. If an instructor’s schedule permits, we may open a small section for one student, with space for up to two more students who want the same time.
