Course fit
English Language Lab I
For students in grades 8–10 who can read ordinary connected text independently and need stronger comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, or speaking confidence. Placement considers reading fluency, comprehension, and readiness to participate. Plan for 60–80 minutes of independent reading across the week, brief vocabulary retrieval, and a short language task. The pilot is designed for up to three students.

- Move from deliberate structural emphasis toward natural, context-sensitive reading.
- Build vocabulary through connected texts and repeated use.

How we learn
Purposeful practice, growing independence.
Independent reading and shared challenging texts work together. Sentence-backbone reading begins as an exaggerated scaffold, then gradually gives way to meaningful phrasing, contextual emphasis, and natural expression. Script reading, discussion, and increasingly independent speech make comprehension audible.

Use gaps in reconstruction to identify where rereading is needed.

Locate the subject head main verb and meaningful phrase boundaries.

Add important objects complements modifiers negation and quantities while keeping function words lighter.
